I´m looking for a GPS-solution for my 5D Mark II and Aperture for RAW-files. I find the PhotoGPS very interesting but unfortunately it does not fit my working environment (RAW + Aperture).

I found your article very useful; confirming what I´ve already read on others blogs/forums.

Apparently the SDF file format photo GPS writes is a proprietary format, not the standard ASCII SDF format. That makes it almost impossible to export the data. You can't even copy it using the standard "copy" command.

@knewter: Believe me, this was one of the first things I tried to play around with. I even installed the extra Compiz settings panel and only then did I realize that the fancy graphics effects weren't supported under VMware. But when it came to blogging about my experiences, I thought it would be too beside the point to talk about a feature I hadn't seen firsthand and couldn't use based on the limitations of my VM.

In fairness, if you were running it in a VM then that means you missed out on all of the compiz eyecandy, which at least warrants a mention.

If you ever get the chance, you should install it n a partition somewhere, enable desktop effects (in appearance), and install compizconfig-settings-manager. It's all eyecandy, but it's extremely compelling, and sometimes the features (like in OS X, you can zoom in by super+mousewheel) are actually intensely useful. I can't TELL you how many flash videos I've zoomed in on that didn't have a fullscreen button.

I do want to emphasize that I don't feel bound by Apple. If I did, I would abandon it in a second, as when I moved away from Windows in 2001. My association with Apple is a conscious and deliberate one: their hardware and software offers nearly everything I want from my gadgets. I spent several years trying to get my Zaurus to be what my iPod Touch was out of the box.

The iPod/iTunes DRM argument doesn't always hold water, either. I actually like iTunes as a player and music manager (again, it's a choice made in full knowledge of the alternatives) and my only true "lock-in" is the single song (The Pixies' "Bam Thwock") I bought from the iTunes Store. The rest of my music is non-DRM MP3, MP4 or FLAC ripped from my CD collection. I'm very wary of something as silly as file formats restricting my choices in the future.

Congrats! A fair and unbiased review made by an open-minded person.

Being an Ubuntu user I welcome such reviews because they help spread the truth about Ubuntu (that it IS a very good OS) and, thanks to a fair critics they help make Ubuntu and its applications even better.

I don't agree with some critics, though.

It's interesting how people bind themselves to Apple. First iPod Touch, then they have to use iTunes to connect to it, then they buy DRM-music via iTunes, which can be read by iTunes only. And all this ends with buying more hardware from Apple. And finally - no escape. Anyway, this is their own choice. I prefer hadware which does not tell me which software I have to use.

Tracker isn't great. If you're using Ubuntu, I recommend you install Gnome Do, which is a more powerful Spotlight equivalent, and can do considerably more than Spotlight through an array of plugins. You can also install Avant Window Navigator, which is an OS X-style dock bar, but again it's a lot more powerful and flexible than its OS X equivalent.

I am a 2 tour Vietnam Veteran who recently retired after 36 years of working in the Defense Industrial Complex on many of the weapons systems being used by our forces as we speak.

Politicians make no difference.

We have bought into the Military Industrial Complex (MIC). If you would like to read how this happens please see:

Through a combination of public apathy and threats by the MIC we have let the SYSTEM get too large. It is now a SYSTEMIC problem and the SYSTEM is out of control. Government and industry are merging and that is very dangerous.

There is no conspiracy. The SYSTEM has gotten so big that those who make it up and run it day to day in industry and government simply are perpetuating their existance.

The politicians rely on them for details and recommendations because they cannot possibly grasp the nuances of the environment and the BIG SYSTEM.

So, the system has to go bust and then be re-scaled, fixed and re-designed to run efficiently and prudently, just like any other big machine that runs poorly or becomes obsolete or dangerous.

This situation will right itself through trauma. I see a government ENRON on the horizon, with an associated house cleaning.

The next president will come and go along with his appointees and politicos. The event to watch is the collapse of the MIC.
